This group enables collaboration between the Jack London community and public safety officials through our Community Resources Officer and our Neighborhood Services Coordinator, sharing best practices and finding solutions for safety issues that affect businesses, residents, and visitors. Regular meetings are held monthly, on the fourth Tuesday at 6:00pm, at the Jack London Improvement District Office. We encourage you to attend a meeting, get to know your neighbors, and get involved in keeping you community safe. Ongoing projects and advocacy to address chronic blight and safety issues in the district

Broadway Betterment

The Jack London Improvement District is working towards a better Broadway that is inviting, active, and safe.

Current and past projects have included community visioning workshops, underpass improvements, way-finding, and public art projects.

Formal Signage

In 2017, we completed the Wayfinding Signage Design and Placement Plan in coordination with the City, Port of Oakland, Jack London Square, WETA, Amtrak, Caltrans and community stakeholders. We contracted directly with MmM Design, City of Oakland's wayfinding signage design consultant. Installation was completed early 2019, with maintenance ongoing.

District Banner Redesign

We completed a reboot of our banner program with some fresh new designs!

Safety Signage

A curbside sign posted around the District from one of our 2017 safety and crime prevention projects.

Painted Pathways

In 2017 we developed a community and business-supported informal wayfinding program that is quick and inexpensive to deploy. We worked with business representatives as well as Visit Oakland on this effort. The project was completed in 2018. You can find the colorful pathways East of Broadway.

Building Art

The Jack London Improvement District is working to incorporate art and culture into the urban fabric of the District.

The Building Art Program was initiated to attract artists and identify space and resources to create and show work. Works to date include wall art, pop-up exhibitions, and original paintings on utility boxes in the District.

Our goal is to replace 3 vandalized art-covered utility boxes, and match contributing funds from private property owners to fund the Building Art Program to facilitate art installations, wall murals and art-wrapped utility boxes.

Train Quiet Zone / Embarcadero Safety Improvements

Rail transit is on the rise through Jack London, and so is activity, visitor foot traffic, residential population, employment, and businesses. Community stakeholders in Jack London have long been interested in improving the pedestrian and vehicular train crossings in Jack London to create safer streets and facilitate a Train Quiet Zone. This long term project includes updating the original study for the project and fundraising for the capital improvements required to implement safer crossings and pedestrian and vehicular interfaces, and considers a Train Quiet Zone in Jack London.

The Rail Safety Working Group (RSWG) is an independent group of volunteers in the District organized to advocate for rail safety through the Howard Terminal EIR approval process. Read their project comment letter here: RSWG Comment Letter.

Special Events & Marketing Collaborations Promoting Local Businesses

To keep the community informed and engaged we will continue the sponsorship, partnership, or direct hosting of community events such as launch events for publicity of projects or developer outreach forums. Project includes District business events to drive foot traffic and exposure to participating businesses, create district-specific collateral for local hotels and new residential buildings, in addition to ongoing promotion and marketing efforts with the Jack London Brewing District and other partners.

National Night Out Block Party

This is a great way to promote community engagement and strengthen partnerships in areas of public safety, economic, land use, retail, community resilience, and business promotion.

Community and Advocacy

SeeClickFix Sweepstakes - Data Drives Deployment

For the month of May 2019, we launched our first ever SeeClickFix sweepstakes. Citizens utilized the City's SeeClickFix system to help solve problems in the public right-of-way for a chance to win a fabulous gift from a Jack London merchant. Two active and wonderful community members each won a wine tasting for two at minimo wine shop! On SeeClick Fix, users are able to report issues, vote to fix favorites, and track response from the City. Check out and track the Jack London Watch Area. Announcing next sweepstakes soon, so stay posted for a chance to be entered and help deploy resources to our neighborhood.
